After Arthur's tragic demise last year, there have been rumblings about getting another dog and I'm not going to lie to you, I've mixed feelings about the whole thing.
That is to say that I could really take it or leave it....with a preference for leaving it.
That's NOT to say that having Arthur for his short little life wasn't a (mostly) positive experience. Just that if it were up to me, the whole pet box thing would have been well and truly ticked, and I'd be A-OK to move on from that particular chapter. (Mixing my metaphors again, I know!)
Call me easily pleased, but the truth is, pet wise, I'd be happy with a gold fish... or better yet, this little hex bug goldfish that Rory got as part if his birthday present this week. I mean look at him- isn't he a cutie? So life like but with the added bonus of no smelly fish food to buy AND his water never needs changing. He even thoughtfully stops swimming after five minutes so as to save on batteries. I mean what's not to like?
This is my kinda pet, peeps- gimme maintenance this low every time. And yet I fear, I'm on my own with this one. Despite initial enthusiasm, Rory's already losing interest and more worryingly still, I discovered Loverboy on the pet section of Gumtree again late last night...and let's just say that he wasn't looking at aquariums.
Yes, the writings on the wall and it's only a matter of time before another furry four legged friend joins our clan, so the best I can hope for is one of the non shedding, medium size variety. (Apparently the wee ones aren't even dogs at all, which I'm pretty sure is canine discrimination.)
Your thoughts and ideas on this matter would certainly be welcome .....in a lukewarm sort of way.
Happy Friday lovelies x
I'm a HUGE fan of those battery fish - lol...I think a mum invented them! Re the dog - we've gone down the borrowing route and it's worked a treat. We get Mandy a day a week for a walk and sometimes she stays with us for the whole day. We also dog-sit for some friends and family on overnights whenever we can and the kids have totally stopped asking for a pet now! I love them but two dead doggies from the road and one re-homed mental case means I just can't do it again :( Ax
ReplyDeletePS if you *do* do it though - I can recommend a Cavalier King Charles...such gentle loveable dogs that don't really stray far from home. More of a lap dog - happy to stay in on a wet windy day, i.e. my kinda doggie x
Love the idea of borrowing a dog- that would more than scratch MY itch...I'm just not sure if it would satisfy the doggy enthusiasts around here though! And thanks for the tip- cavalier King Charles are lovely dogs.
DeleteWe keep talking bout getting a puppy. The kids are very very keen, I'm less so. However I was on a 'Recognizing & Managing Stress' course yesterday & having, and therefore walking a dog was seen as a good way to reduce stress. So ...
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're half way there already....who will be the first to take the plunge I wonder....
DeleteI thought this was my kinda pet too but he died after 2 months and I have no idea what he died off. How I keep 4 children healthy I'll never know! lol
ReplyDeleteOooooops! You and me are clearly cut from the same cloth ;-)
DeleteWe have a hamster and it's a nightmare, it escapes and eats the carpet (my fault for trapping it in the room) I forget to clean his cage and when I do remember to put him in his ball I forget and end up kicking him across the room all accidental. The children have no interest in it what so ever fortunately OH has pet allergies so anything with fur is a big no no unless I want to love with a person who is constantly sniffing, watering eyes and a face that blows up twices it's size.
ReplyDeleteHamsters....now all I'm thinking about is those chipmunk movies. You're a braver woman than me!
DeleteWe have a dog of the German shepherd variety and I love the freedom it brings us. I never have to worry about locking the door ( only a complete ntter would break in) and when the OH goes away I feel totally safe and looked after.
ReplyDeleteFrom a practical point of view it's a real pain on the arse adding to the house work but the fact my otherwise grumpy teenager takes the dog out for a 40 minute walk every night keeps our house harmonious.yes digs are a definite plus when it comes to teenage mood management :) x
lol must get a battery fish!!
ReplyDeleteWe have a cat which is minimum effort as all we need to do is feed her and then she just goes about minding her own business and avoiding the boys.
I am guessing you are more of a dog family though - would love a dog too one day but we need a lot more space first x
get a doggie! actually that borrowing idea sounds good, but with the kids various activities that would probably be hard to fit in. Max shreds and needs lots of activity, but a springer is a joy.
ReplyDeletealso there are places to get wee doggies that have been rejected xx
max sheds hair that should read
ReplyDeleteI have just found your blog today and you've made me laugh out loud - Aldi song and cry - poor Arthur. I have bookmarked you now and hope to follow your quest to get/not get another dog. We have a Cockerpoo - well he was sold to us as a Cockerpoo but apparently his dad was a corgipoo and he looks much more corgipoo than cockerpoo but he doesn't shed and he's very cute and he's quite daft but we adore him, he's 11 months old. We waited 3 years after losing our last dog and he's a nuisance when we want to go away (dogsitters) but on the whole he's the most positive addition to our family. Having read other comments, we had a Cavalier before and they are very prone to heart conditions (our vet nicknamed his new heart monitor after our dog cos he reckons it was our visits that meant he could afford it!!!) and they do shed so if you go down that route get it vet checked thoroughly before it wriggles into your familys hearts cos they are adorable! Love your blog, look forward to visiting often.
