Hump Day

Just lush..
No words needed...
Never underestimate the power of blue leopard nail foils to lift one's mood on a wet Wednesday in November... Or Grazia magazine.... Or a new series of The Real Housewives.... Or a caramel square....

Whatever it is that floats YOUR boat may, (like mine), be trivial or silly in the great scheme of things, and wonderfully different for everyone certainly, but IMHO, it's these mini milestones that  make an ordinary day all the sweeter... or at the very least, a little more bearable!
So go on, do share... tell us what's sweetening YOUR day today?

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig!

All roads lead to...
So we're home now from the Caravilla, having just done a three weeker up there, and a very fine time we had too! After a washout week weather wise over the 12th, THIS time I went prepared- as in, I  ditched the heels and pashminas for welly bobs and a raincoat! (Before you ask, OBVIOUSLY, I still brought a makeup and jewellry selection-that would be a step too far.)
As it turned out though, this time we were SO lucky with the weather, that the wellybobs didn't even get a wee turn! The kids lived in shorts and t shirts, the sun (mostly) shone, and life was good. If I've learned one thing about Donegal summers, it's that just because it's pouring in the morning, doesn't mean you won't be sunning yourself and skinny dipping that afternoon... and vice versa. Once I realised that, I actually began to like it, because it forced me not to plan too far ahead. I tried to just let the good times roll with the weather, because Irish chances were, we'd probably be listening to the rain beat off the roof later on!
Our 'The Hills are Alive' moment
But anyway, now we're home, and the house seems MASSIVE and our bed super duper luxurious! (Now, dont get me wrong, the bed in the caravilla is cosy and snug..... but more than a tad vertically challenged, and a teensy bit too compact and bijoux pour moi on a long term basis.)
And don't even get me started on the emotional reunion with my bath! Having been bathless for three weeks, it was SUCH a treat to fill it with Jo Malone bubbles and sink into it, Grazia in hand. Showers have their place-they're functional and fast- the hygiene equivalent of a rocky bar, or a penguin, or possibly even a club milk, but a bath...well, it's a really good caramel square, or a slice of home made coffee cake. There's simply no comparison. One scratches an itch, the other is an itch all of its own!
My usual morning walk
And yet....after a day or so, the novelty of baths and beds and space has begun to wear off, and I find myself missing the beautiful simplicity of life in the Caravilla. The way that after the few days it takes me to wind down, real life with its many pressures, appointments, to do lists  and complications begins to seem very far away.
And the simple things like a walk on the beach, or the sun on your face, or the sound of the waves, can bring a contentment you only get to appreciate away from all the hustle and bustle.
It's probably something to do with the fact that the summer is drawing to a close, and although we'll be up again for a few weekends, our long stretch there is over until next year, and that makes me a little sad. The days are shortening again, a new term is looming and the mundanities of school shoes, hair cuts and potty training are on my immediate horizon.
Soon the long, sunny summer days will be only a memory...(And a hazy one at that, because obviously I'm already forgetting the quare bit of torrential rain and the numerous times we shook our heads muttering 'It's desperate- you'd think it was November! Sure you wouldn't live here unless you had to!')
But where there's a yin, there's a yang, and a whole lot of good stuff is coming up for us too. My little sister is getting married in a few weeks, and my brother and his lovely family are coming home from California for the celebrations. My other sister's new baby is due at the very same time, (although fingers crossed, Junior won't make an appearance till after the ceremony, because like me, she's signed up to be both bridesmaid and wedding singer!) And then, after all that excitement and family time, at the end of September, I'm off to the MAD awards in London ... and 3 whole nights away with Loverboy! As I said,  plenty to look forward to.
So here's to the end of one season and the beginning of another....but, hold on, not quite yet, it's still August after all.

Down to Earth with a Bump!

Ah well, all good things must come to an end. Isn't that an awful glass half empty, buzzkill of an expression, though? To me, it smacks of Mondays and holidays ending and diets starting and bloody loads of ironing....or maybe I'm just reading too much into it?
The cocktail bar in The Merchant
Fittingly, the media whirlwind of last week was topped off with a wee night away in the Merchant* with Loverboy-only the fanciest schmanciest hotel in Belfast! It was a gift for his recent (big) birthday from his brother and sister in law, and it even included babysitting! Now, THAT'S what I call a present! Don't take this the wrong way but, (speaking for myself), it was a zillion times better than last year's gift of sewer rods.  Although not an obvious gift choice, they've proved to be very useful in their own way, and Loverboy certainly seems to spend many a happy hour outside, sticking them down drains or whatever else you do with them.
That said, I'd be lying if I said that this year's gift wasn't much closer to my own heart, and even though it wasn't technically my present, I can enjoy it too, non? And logically, as my appreciation likely deepens HIS enjoyment, everyone's a winner here!
So, into the Big Smoke we went, straight to the brand new Mac for a constitutional glass of wine and a yummy cheese and ham toastie, which was somewhat pretentiously named a Croque Monsieur. (Or maybe they were being ironic? I'm not sure.) Then it was off around the town, soaking up the atmosphere and having a mooch in the shops.
Nice work, if you can get it!
I just HAD to show you the picture of this boyo though, (and yes we did put money in his basket!). Is this not the laziest bit of busking you've ever seen in your life? What basically happens is, he sticks on a bit of music and then kicks back while the two giant Tiny Tears up the front do all the work! Not a bad gig at all and it got me thinking about 'Billy Bass' on the wall in the playroom. He's a fish on a plaque that wriggles about and sings 'Dont Worry, Be Happy' and 'Take me to the River'. Now, what's to stop me bringing Billy,  a load of batteries, a picnic, a deck chair, and most importantly of all, a sturdy cash receptacle, and setting up in Corn Market some Saturday afternoon? Bound to be worth a few quid surely, and the craic'd be ninety!
To the manor born..
After that, it was off to the Merchant, and up to our HUGE art deco inspired room- pure luxury-it even had gold leather cushioned doors on the wardrobe, and a mirror with lights right around it, just like in Cabaret! I was in heaven! Honestly though, how does one stay in a Holiday Inn after this? For me, the answer is an unequivocal 'they don't !' (unless of course, you've 5 kids in tow, in which case all bets are off.)
We went up for a nosy to the top floor, where there's a gym, (as if) and an outdoor hot tub looking out over the city. Perfect for quaffing champers in, but unfortunately, another couple had the same idea. Himself and myself couldn't be arsed making small talk, and besides, I'd just had a blow dry and hadn't shaved my legs, so we headed back to the room to languish happily, reading magazines and 'double Apple-ing'**(Me!), before heading out for dinner.
In the midst of all this relaxation, I became terribly distracted by a photograph, posted by a friend on my Facebook wall, of one of the most delicious caramel squares I'd ever clapped eyes on. Instantly demanding to know who supplied her, she informed me of an entire stall dedicated to tray bakes in St. George's market -just ponder on that for a moment- because quite frankly, I've been able to think of little else ever since. So in the name of research, I'm off to see the wizard next weekend and I intend to stockpile several- I even plan on testing their freezability potential, but don't fret, I'll give you a full and detailed analysis.
It has to be said, that it was the loveliest of twenty four hours- my only complaint was that it wasn't long enough! One minute I was in the Great Room in the Merchant having a 3 course breakfast, and the next, (or so it seemed!), putting on a wash and making the lunches. Talk about down to earth with a bump! Then again, maybe it helps you appreciate it all the more? And sure, as someone helpfully reminded me- all good things must come to an end....
 * I am not being sponsored to give lovely compliments to this hotel....but I SO would if I was asked.*bats eyelashes*

I MAY have mentioned this before ;-) but I'm a finalist in two categories in the MAD Blog Awards. If you're feeling any love at all for this wee blog, I'd really appreciate it if you could vote for me in the Family Life category (the other one is decided by judges). Here's the link- http://www.the-mads.com/vote.htm and thank you very much xxxx
PS While you're there, check out the other finalists-who'd have believed there were so many amazing blogs out there?

Caramel Squares - It's a minefield...

Behold the almost perfect proportions of this this little number
There are few things in life more disappointing than a bad caramel square. Okay, fair enough, that may be something of an exaggeration, but some of you probably know that I take this issue very seriously indeed. In fact, I SO appreciate a fine caramel square, (or 'millionaires' shortbread' as some like to call it), that  to encounter a bad one, is frankly a one way street to Bad Moodsville. Those who do know me, are well are aware of this weakness, likely because they've been dragged to specially sourced coffee shops just to watch me consume a worthy sample with the utmost reverence.
I've definitely had my fingers burnt in the past, (metaphorically because I've never ACTUALLY made them myself), with below par offerings and indeed I would modestly consider myself something of an expert. But even I, with my vast amount of experiece in this field, am not immune to making mistakes. Today for example, my BFF actually treated me to breakfast AND, while paying, a caramel square for later. (That's precisely why she IS my BFF!)  I mean, obviously I made the right noises-
'No, no, that's FAR too much. Don't you DARE, I MEAN it!,"  but she calmly ignored my entreaties, then made to choose any old caramel square and I simply couldn't have that, so I directed the seller myself,
'No, no, not that one, the other one. No, the other, other one. That's the one!"

This is what disappointment looks
In other words, I can't blame anyone but myself... but can I just say, in my defence, that the lowest of tricks was employed.  The (seemingly) heavily laden caramel side was displayed so enticingly, and I was so entranced by it's (apparently) perfect proportions, that almost before I knew it, it was in crisp white paper, snugly in my bag. It was only later, when I got home, that the full extent of my error was revealed. The thick caramel layer was, in fact, an illusion - only one side was thick, the rest was a mere skim - I know - I'm STILL trying to come to terms with this. The shortbread was dry and crumbly, and the chocolate, what there was of it, was clearly supermarket brand. Gutted, I was, absolutely gutted. What I'd planned to enjoy with a milky coffee to fortify me for my afternoon of school runs and homeworks, turned out to be an absolute travesty, not even worthy to bear the name 'Caramel square'.  So I disposed of it in the only way possible - by feeding it to the hungry hoards when they came in from school, proving yet again that they'll eat anything-a small comfort indeed.
