Pipes of Peace

We went to the Peace Proms in the Belfast Waterfront Hall last night. Our Cormac was one of 800 children from primary schools from both sides of the border and of all denonminations, performing with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland and various soloists, and I have to say- it was absolutely tote amaze! What a wonderful opportunity  for these children to experience performing in a world renowned concert hall, with such talented musicians - it was surely a night they'll always remember.
They've been living and breathing the songs for months (we all have!), but all their hard work paid off and they just seemed to eat it up-there's something very joyful seeing hundreds of children bopping the whole way through and singing their wee hearts out! Taylor Swift's 'The Climb, Bobby Mc Ferrin's 'Don't Worry, Be Happy', Gloria Estefan's 'Get on your Feet'- they were all in there!
But my favourite, and by far the most meaningful and moving, was the big finale and ensemble piece 'Crossing Borders'. To hear the children's voices singing these words, in all their innocent sweetness, blessedly unburdened by our chequered history filled me with a fresh hope....especially in the light of the recent wearisome protests. Maybe this new generation will finally get it right. Here it is...

Crossing Borders

VERSE:

Although we have different stories
We share a piece of common ground
There's a sound that we all can hear
Let Peace be heard all around.
Brothers and sisters
Living life in Harmony
Reach out your hand today
Let Peace be heard all around.

CHORUS:

From Donegal to Antrim
From Killarney's Lakes so blue
From Belfast to County Louth
We're crossing borders new.

VERSE:

Hear the Pipes and the Lambeg
Embrace the Fife and the Drum
The Uilleann Pipes and the Sean Nós song
Can all play as one
Our path to peace has been fraught for long
Our history can't be denied
What's done is done, let the future shine
Let Peace be heard all around

CHORUS:

From Donegal to Antrim
From Killarney's Lakes so blue
From Belfast to County Louth
We're crossing borders new.
